About UsStipends for residents at SUNY Downstate Medical Center are revised annually and are competitive with other universities nationwide. If a resident has previous training in another specialty the stipend level may be adjusted up. Stipend rates vary slightly according to payroll source, based on differences in health insurance programs sponsored by the affiliate hospitals. The stipends noted below are average rates for 2008 - 2009:

Comprehensive health insurance plans including dental coverage are provided. Life insurance, catastrophic, and accidental death policies are also available. Professional liability insurance is provided.
Residents are entitled to four weeks paid vacation. Residents may receive five working days to attend scientific meetings. Lab coats and scrubs are provided and laundered by the hospital. Parking for residents is available on site.
The Faculty Student Association (FSA) is a not-for-profit corporation providing auxiliary services to the SUNY Downstate Medical Center community. FSA has a Board of Directors consisting of campus faculty, students and administrators.
The FSA services include the Bookstore, Courtyard Café and Ticket Service (for Broadway and Off Broadway shows). The FSA offices are located in Room 203 in the Student Center.
The Residential Life and Services Department provides on campus housing as well as providing listings of apartments, rooms, shares and houses for rent. They also provide an Off Campus Housing Manual to assist you in your search for accommodations, comprehending leases, understanding newspaper advertisements and other helpful information.

The Student Center is the hub of student and resident social activities. The Student Center sponsors most of the recreational activities offered at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. The Center's policies are established by the Student Center Governing Board, comprised of students from each college and school on campus. The Board offers a variety of year-round events and programs.
The athletic facilities consist of a gymnasium, swimming pool, sauna,
Jacuzzi, universal gym, weight lifting equipment and other exercise
machines, squash courts, tennis courts, billiards, table tennis and
locker rooms.
The special events and programs include: movies, coffee house, happy
hours, comic nights, "Spring Ring", mini courses such as swimming,
photography and aerobics. Intramural sports include basketball, floor
hockey, volleyball and soccer.
